Written About me, For You

Heartwork

27 years old with the world at my feet
Traded a broken heart for empty bottles under my passenger seat
She found her fairy tale, where does that leave me?
Just a man looking for any reason to bereave

I’ve written these words about me, for you
The day’s gonna come you trade your tears for something, too
Remember these words about me for you
Just thought you’d need to know someone else made it through

28 years old, bloody fist into my own bedroom door
“Time heals everything” is a bandage that doesn’t fit my wounds anymore
Turns out I’m far too good at breaking my own heart
Let me put myself in a box before I tear something else apart

I’ve written these words about me, for you
The day’s gonna come you let yourself down, too
Remember these words about me, for you
Just thought you’d need to know someone else made it through

Now I’ve not seen so many things, but I’ve lost my way
And the story of a mended heart carries some weight.
Her voice still burns in my dreams, calling my name as I look on
Love streets flow with toxic waste

29 years old, shame wrapped around my neck
And I’m here to tell you friends, that’s about as real as it gets

I don’t blame you for losing faith in me
’Cause I lost it, too
The moment she said this love had nothing green left to do
Crying, “You’ve gotta hold onto my heart
You’re the one thing I can’t lose”
She said, “I’m just holding up a mirror
Now tell yourself the truth”

So, when no one in the world gives a damn what you’ve been through
Just know my heart’s still beating if only for you
